Local Connection: Classroom Heat

By: Rick Blangiardi

The days are becoming warmer and for many public school students, that means that they are going to have to put up with unbearable heat in the classrooms.

We have well documented the efforts of the DOE to get as many classrooms air conditioned as possible and we realize it is not easy as popping in a wall unit and walking away.

Besides the bureaucracy and the financing, some schools don't have the proper wiring and labor to do the job.

However, it's always gratifying when the private sector steps in and so kudos go out to cutter Buick, GMC, Mazda of Waipahu and for providing AC units and installation services for 12 classrooms in the Waipahu area.

Mahalo also to Drew Santos of Fujitsu Hawaii, Sherman Louis of Airmasters Hawaii and Keith Morrill of KM electric for their assistance.

The lucky schools are August Ahrens Elementary, Honowai Elementary, Kaleiopuu Elementary and Waipahu Elementary. the units were installed between march 16 and 20, when the students were on spring break. the principals picked the classrooms.

So now that these businesses have stepped up, who is next to do a good thing for the schools? Summer is coming and the students are waiting.
