Hawaiian Word of the Day: 'Iewe

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Hawaiian Word of the Day is 'iewe. 'Iewe is the Hawaiian word for placenta, or afterbirth. It was believed that the placenta took care of a baby prenatally, much like an elder sibling would care for a younger sibling out in the world. Out of love and respect for the relationship of the 'iewe to the baby, 'iewe were returned to the earth planted under or near a tree at the family home. It was also believed that the child would grow up the same as the tree near which its 'iewe was buried. The Hawaiian Word of the Day is 'iewe.
