Heavy rain drops 8+ inches in Windward Oahu

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Southeast winds over the islands resulted in heavy rain along parts of the Koolau Range of Oahu, with rain rates as high as two inches per hour.

The heavy rain prompted the National Weather Service in Honolulu to issue a Flash Flood Warning for much of Wednesday evening for the area from just north of Kaneohe to Hauula. At one point, a stream gage on Punaluu Stream showed a rapid rise in water levels to more than 7 feet. The rain gage at the Punaluu Stream recorded 8.28 inches of rain between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. Of that total, 4.58 inches fell between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Winds will be blowing from the southeast for much of the rest of the week, which will make it difficult to predict shower activity. That's because the smaller islands could be affected by clouds pluming from the Big Island and Maui. Historically, this has led to anchored heavy showers along the windward slopes of the Koolau mountains.
