Police say man intentionally stepped in front of bus on H-1

PEARL CITY, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Honolulu police are investigating a fatal accident in which they say a man intentionally stepped in front of a city bus on the H-1 Freeway.

The incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m. in the westbound lanes just before the Waipahu offramp. Police closed the two right lanes of the freeway during the investigation, which tied up afternoon rush hour traffic. The lanes were reopened before 6 p.m.

A spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said the victim was not a state worker or a contractor working on road construction in the area. His identity was not immediately released, but emergency responders said he was in his 20s.

Officials allowed motorists to use shoulder lanes and opened the HOV lanes to all vehicles to try to alleviate traffic. Nighttime roadwork in the westbound direction was also delayed until 10 p.m. to allow traffic to clear.
