HONOLULU (AP) - Lawmakers from Hawaii's House and Senate are negotiating how the state will spend its $26.3 billion budget over the next two years.

They held the first of a series of conference committee meetings on Tuesday.

Leaders from both chambers are announcing parts of the budget where they reached agreement. But most of the major decisions will be reached later.

The committees agreed to fund two new positions for pesticide surveillance and one new position ensuring government agencies post information online.

They also approved more funding for the highway's zipper lane, which recently broke down causing major traffic delays.

The committees haven't yet agreed on how much to spend on the University of Hawaii or programs to help homeless families.

House Finance Chairwoman Sylvia Luke says there are tough negotiations ahead.
