MAKAPUU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Loved ones gathered near Makapuu on Sunday to place flowers and balloons at a memorial for a hiker who fell to her death from an off-limits trail in East Oahu.

Friends say Darlene Feliciano, a 2005 graduate of McKinley High School, was a zone merchandise supervisor at the Walmart on Keeaumoku Street and was an avid hiker in her spare time.

Her co-workers called her an outstanding employee, who was very outgoing and loved hiking.

The 27-year-old plunged 500 feet off a steep ridge while hiking the Makapuu "Tom-Tom" trail on Friday.  It's an area known as the puka, or hole in the ridgeline, overlooking Makapuu Beach.

Officials say she was hiking with a friend when she slipped and fell.  The Honolulu Fire Department helicopter airlifted her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her Walmart family says it's still so surreal and they're in shock and are heartbroken.  Her co-workers brought in flowers and put them in her work station.

Walmart says they are reaching out to the family and are willing to help out in any way.

Her autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
