New concept from celebrity chef Roy Yamaguchi opens at The Shops at Kukui’ula
POIPU, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Acclaimed chef and James Beard Award winner Roy Yamaguchi opens The Eating House 1849 on Kaua'i at The Shops at Kukui'ula. Named after one of the first restaurants constructed in Hawai'i, by a Portuguese businessman named Peter Fernandez, Eating House plays homage to the popular casual eateries of the mid 19th century that incorporated a medley of flavors from the Islands' growing and diverse communities.
Emphasizing Hawai'i's abundance of fresh, local produce and ingredients, Eating House pays tribute to the practices born out of Fernandez's original restaurant, where the chef would rely on seasonal offerings whenever possible. Moreover, Yamaguchi's Eating House draws inspiration from his grandfather, who owned a tavern and restaurant in Wailuku, Maui during the 1940s, which featured an array of ethnic Hawaiian-style comfort foods. Showcasing the scale of vibrant flavors throughout the state – with influences from countries such as Japan, China, Portugal, Korea, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines – Eating House prepares contemporary dishes that are rooted in Hawai'i's robust culinary history and adaptations of home-style plates. Sourcing from Hawaiian farmers, ranchers, foragers, and fishermen each day, such as Makaweli Ranch, Kunana Dairy, Garden Isle Seafood, and Kauai Fresh Farms, the restaurant honors Old Hawai'i and its unique character.
The food is accompanied by a dynamic beverage program, featuring fresh cocktails and a selection of global wines and craft beers. The restaurant is designed by architect Brian Fujiwara, an adaptation of plantation blueprints from the 1800s, inspired by Fernandez's original Eating House location and its communal spaces, where guests could congregate and relax.
The Eating House is open 7 days a week, Monday to Sunday from 11:30 AM to 10 PM.
The Eating House 1849 is located at The Shops at Kukui'ula (2829 Ala Kalanikaumaka Road, Poipu, HI 96756). For more information, please call (808) 742-5000 or click here, and connect on Facebook, Twitter (@EatingHouse1849) and Instagram (@EatingHouse1849).
