Hawaii moves closer to allowing medical marijuana dispensaries

Hawaii is one step closer to allowing medical marijuana dispensaries.

On Tuesday, the Hawaii Senate approved a bill that would allow up to one dispensary license in each county. Each license would cover up to one cultivation site and two dispensing locations.

Medical marijuana was legalized in the state almost 15 years ago, but because there are no dispensaries, patients have to grow it themselves or purchase it on the black market. There are approximately 13,000 patients who use medical marijuana in Hawaii.

The next step is for both chambers to work out the details on how the dispensary system should work.

The medical marijuana dispensaries bill is just one of dozens of proposals the Hawaii Legislature is passing ahead of a deadline.
