Big Island man arrested after officer-involved shooting

A man whose actions forced an officer to open fire on him has now been arrested.

24-year-old Daesyn Pacheco-Muragin was arrested in his home two days after he drove his car at two officers.

On Friday, April 10, officers arrived at Mokuna Street in the Royal Hawaiian Estates where they came upon a suspicious car. As an officer approached in a squad car, the suspicious vehicle, driven by Pacheco-Murgain, drove directly at him.

Pacheco-Murgain swerved at the last minute, just avoiding a collision, and fled the scene.

Moments later, Pacheco-Muragin was spotted driving north in the southbound lane of Highway 11 in the Mountain View area. Pacheco-Muragin proceeded to drive through an active construction zone and then directly at an officer directing traffic.

The officer fired three shots at the vehicle which continued traveling towards Hilo.

Two days later on April 12, at 6:30 a.m., detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Division executed a search warrant at the Mountain View home of Pacheco-Muragin and arrested him on two outstanding bench warrants. He was also arrested on suspicion of the following offenses: attempted first-degree murder, four counts of first-degree terroristic threatening and one count of attempted criminal property damage.

Pacheco-Muragin had no apparent injuries from the shooting incident on Friday. He was taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives continue the investigation.
