KAENA POINT, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A diver in distress was rescued late Friday night by the Coast Guard about a mile offshore of Kaena Point.

Shortly after 10:00 p.m., Coast Guard received notification from a disabled mariner that one of its passengers was diving about 500 yards away and became distressed and was drifting offshore.

The disabled vessel, which was unable to retrieve the diver itself, was able to keep an eye on him due to the light he was wearing.

Just before 11:30 p.m. the Coast Guard launched their MH-65 Dolphin helicopter to make the rescue, and before the clock struck midnight the diver was hoisted from the water to safety.

The diver was transported to waiting EMS personnel at Yokohama Bay; the diver is reported to be in good condition.

The disabled vessel was safely towed into Waianae Boat Harbor by the Honolulu Fire Department.
