AP investigation details Honolulu airport perimeter breaches

Honolulu International Airport Honolulu International Airport

HONOLULU (AP) - Three times in recent years, intruders got past the security fencing that surrounds Honolulu International Airport.

The Associated Press learned of the breaches - two in 2013, one in 2012 - during an investigation that documented 268 such incidents at 31 major U.S. airports between January 2004 and January 2015.

Also, in 2004, local media reported a 17-year-old Hawaii Kai boy rammed his sports car through a security gate as he fled a traffic stop.

And there may be other breaches in Honolulu beyond the four AP identified. Due to Hawaii's rules for how long official documents must be kept, state officials said it may not have records prior to 2012.

Airports say breaches are relatively rare. Security measures typically include fences, cameras and patrols, but there are gaps.
