ProjectFocus Hawaii?s is an all-volunteer non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a healing voice to at-risk children through the medium of photography. It strives to enhance self-esteem, self-awareness, and self-reflection - all critical components in fostering the resilience necessary to make a fulfilling life from challenging ingredients.
Since its inception in 2005, ProjectFocus has worked with children from 10 different organizations who have collectively suffered homelessness, drug addition, substance abuse, mental abuse, life-threatening illnesses, physical and cognitive challenges, mental illness. incarceration, domestic violence and the death of one or both parents.
The ProjectFocus internships and resulting exhibits are testaments to participants' resilience in the face of adversity.ProjectFocus is independently funded through monetary and in-kind gifts received from the generous support of foundations, individuals and community and business leaders.
Co-founders and professional photographers, Laurie Callies and Lisa Uesugi, conduct all aspects of the program on a pro bono basis. PFH will celebrate its 10th anniversary on May 2, 2015 with a retrospective exhibit titled, "360 Degrees," & will be bringing back many of its participants to share their "visual" success stories.
