Board of Education approves public school meal price increase

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Board of Education approved a price increase for public school breakfast and lunch Tuesday.

Breakfast will be 25 cents more, while lunches will be an additional 10 cents. Students on free or reduced meals will not be affected by the change.

"In order for our schools to continue to provide quality meals for our students, the food we provide can not be heavily processed,” said Dann Carlson, assistant superintendent for School Facilities and Support Services. “Serving nutritious food made by our staff is better for our students but it comes at a cost.”

The price hike comes from a 2009 state law requiring the state Department of Education to charge half of the cost to prepare meals, which has been increasing due to inflation and labor costs.

The DOE has taken steps to reduce the cost of meals by using a centralized vendor to get better prices for students.

Over 100,000 meals are served every day during the academic year.

The new regular meal prices are listed below:

SY 2015-16

Breakfast K-8

Breakfast 9-12
