Maui officer gets probation for child endangerment charge

WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) - A Maui police officer has been sentenced to a year of probation after pleading no contest to endangering her 3-year-old son.

The misdemeanor charge against Rachel Kealoha stems from a June crash while she was driving and hit a guardrail, with her son riding in the backseat.

Deputy Prosecutor Ryan Teshima says witnesses who saw her before the crash believed she was drunk.

Defense attorney David Sereno says she had one beer and was emotional from a recent divorce proceeding.

Wailuku newspaper Maui News reported Tuesday Kealoha will have an opportunity to keep the conviction off her record, which will allow her to keep her job.

Kealoha was part of the recruit class that graduated in November 2007.
