HONOLULU (AP) - A Honolulu bicycle sharing program is expected to running by early next year.

Organizers had aimed to launch it this summer but hiring staff took longer than expected. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser newspaper reported Monday the nonprofit group behind the program also has to secure most of the $10 million to $12 million in startup costs.

Bikeshare Hawaii President and Chief Operating Officer Ben Trevino says the group has so far secured about $1.3 million, mostly through the city.

The program would allow access to a network of small stations around town to rent and return bikes. More than 30 U.S. cities have a bike-share program.

The Honolulu system is envisioned to begin with as many as 183 stations and nearly 1,700 bicycles from Kapahulu Avenue to River Street.
