KALIHI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

One man was injured in a three-alarm fire in that destroyed a two-story Kalihi home and damaged a neighboring residence.

The Honolulu Fire Department said two people were in the home at 1240 Kaauwai Place when the fire was reported shortly after 4 p.m.

More than 50 firefighters responded to the blaze, which sent thick smoke over Kalihi and across the H-1 freeway near the Houghtailing Street exit.

Firefighters had the blaze controlled at 4:45 p.m. It was declared extinguished a half hour later.

Fire Capt. David Jenkins said one man was taken to the hospital for burn injuries he sustained while trying to fight the flames.

Jenkins said four people lived in the home, including a man, a woman, their grown son and another adult male. The son was the person taken to the hospital. Another 19 people lived in the home next door, which sustained water and some fire damage. All were being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Investigators remained at the scene late in the afternoon trying to determine the cause of the blaze and the amount of damage, but Jenkins said the home is likely a total loss.
