Local Connection: Children's Discovery Center

By: Rick Blangiardi

The Children's Discovery Center has become surrounded by homeless families and individuals but rather than complaining about the predicament, the nonprofit did an extraordinary kindness on March 16 when it organized a humanitarian health event for those right outside its doors.

The center invited Project Vision Hawaii, which provided eye exams and prescriptions for glasses, as well as the Laulima Project and Keiki O Ka Aina, who brought shoes, toys and blankets.

The Hawaii Health Connector was there for health insurance options to help the Kakaako homeless, a third of whom are from Micronesia.

The UH Medical School, the Waikiki Mobile Health Unit and many others too numerous to name converged on the area to help with illnesses or to detect symptoms of what could turn into major health problems.

We believe the Children's Discovery Center and Loretta Yajima, founder and chair of the board of director's, deserve a lot of credit for turning a negative situation into a positive one.

The Discovery Center continues to welcome its customers but does so at the same time as helping neighbors outside the center who need a helping hand.

The fact that the Discovery Center would go to such great lengths to organize this special day deserves our applause.
