Local Connection: Mayor Wright Housing

By: Rick Blangiardi

Life at Mayor Wright Housing is difficult enough but to have rats and roaches roam the units, garbage overflowing, no hot water and crumbling walls and ceilings is inexcusable.

Thanks to the Hawaii Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice, the tenants are getting some relief, to the tune of 350- thousand dollars and a pledge to keep maintenance ongoing.

Unfortunately, nearly four hundred households are included so the money isn't much per unit.

The Hawaii Public Housing Authority says many of the problems have already been fixed and about 4.5 million dollars has already been invested in Mayor Wright Housing.

It's not just Mayor Wright that has had deplorable conditions. In 2008, the housing authority was forced to make needed repairs and upgrades to Kuhio Park Terrace and Kuhio Homes.

Thankfully there is a long-term plan to replace Mayor Wright Housing, which includes knocking down all 364 units and replacing them with 12- hundred homes for low and moderate income families.

Maybe then those who need safe and clean housing can live in decency.
