Hawaiian Airlines battles Delta for the Tokyo, Haneda flight slot
Hawaiian Airlines has decided to appeal a federal decision to let Delta Air Lines keep a flight slot it has barely been using between Tokyo Haneda and SeaTac. DOT said American Airlines would be a second choice. American has said it would use the slot to fly Haneda to LAX, a route already served by Delta.
There are only four slots at Haneda for all U.S. airlines. Hawaiian serves Honolulu with one and United uses one to serve SFO. Announcing the appeal decision on “Sunrise,” CEO Mark Dunkerley said DOT favors business travelers over leisure travelers and has a track record of siding with the larger airlines, though Hawaiian Airlines has the best record of all these carriers at making a financial success of flights to Tokyo Haneda.
