WAIKELE,OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The State Department of Transportation says the Zipper Lane on the H-1 freeway will remain deployed overnight Tuesday due to a breakdown in the Zip Mobile.

According to the DOT, the Zip Mobile stalled in the Waikele area around 9:30 a.m. while removing the extra carpool lane used for the morning eastbound rush. State officials say the stall is due to a computer glitch, which crews are working to repair.

There is no estimate for when the glitch will be fixed. Drivers in the westbound direction are reporting major slowdowns -- some as long as three hours to get from town to Kapolei -- due to the loss of the far left lanes of the H-1 freeway.

To help reduce the afternoon rush hour congestion, the Department of Transportation will take the following measures:

  • The Zipper Lane will remain deployed overnight and will be opened to westbound traffic (all vehicles) through 10 p.m. Only one exit from the Zipper Lane will be possible at the west side terminus near the Managers Drive (Lumiaina Street) Overpass in Waikele. Heading westbound, the Zipper Lane entrance can be accessed from the left lane of Nimitz Highway just west of the Sand Island Access Road intersection. HPD officers and portable message boards will be posted to facilitate traffic.
  • The H-1 westbound right shoulder lane will be opened to traffic from the Kaonohi Street Overpass to the Pearl City/Waimalu Off-Ramp (Exit 10) through 10 p.m.
  • In coordination with HDOT and the City & County of Honolulu, the Honolulu Rail Transit Authority (HART) will be postponing their westbound projects overnight.
