Hilo man dies following Kona motorcycle crash

KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Police have identified the man who was killed Sunday afternoon in a motorcycle crash on the Big Island.

66-year-old Darryl Arruda of Hilo died following a two-motorcycle collision at the intersection of Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway and Kealakehe Parkway in Kailua-Kona around 3 p.m.

Police say Arruda was driving a 1994 Harley Davidson motorcycle and was traveling in a group with seven other motorcycles, when the lead motorcyclist braked suddenly at a traffic light.

Arruda was unable to stop in time and slammed into the lead motorcycle, causing both bikes to overturn. Arruda suffered a serious head injury from the collision and was transported to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and is asking for anyone who witnessed the crash to call Officer Kimo Keliipaakaua or Acting Sergeant Justin Hooser at 326-4646, Ext. 229. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.

The other driver in the crash, a 52-year-old man from Hilo, was not injured in the crash.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
