Mayor says he used county credit card for personal expenses

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - The mayor of Hawaii County has acknowledged using a county-issued credit card for personal expenses, including a nearly $900 tab at a Honolulu hostess bar.

Big Island newspaper West Hawaii Today reports Mayor Billy Kenoi charged $892 on his county card in December 2013, in violation of county policy prohibiting county credit card use for personal expenses or for purchasing alcohol.

Kenoi says he reimbursed the county in March 2014.

He calls it an error in judgment and that he takes full responsibility.

Kenoi says he's used the county card for other personal purchases but that he always reimburses the county.

The newspaper reports repeated attempts to obtain copies of Kenoi's credit card statements have been rejected by the county.
