Four naval personnel were hiking back to the parking lot from the Pali Notches around 3:45 p.m. when three members of the party were separated from the fourth remaining member.

When the three men realized their friend was no longer with them, they retraced their steps back up the trail to look for him.

Their search yielded the discovery of the body of their friend who had fallen nearly 50 feet.

The separated hiker died from injuries he sustained during the fall; he was 21-years-old and stationed on the USS John Paul Jones according to officials.

The deceased hiker is estimated to have been enlisted for about four months; the hike's surviving members are estimated to be in their early twenties as well and enlisted for about seven months at the most.

According to the deceased hiker's friends, the weather "turned on them" while they were on the trail.

The deceased hiker will not be identified until the medical examiner performs an autopsy.
