Michelle Molineaux serves the people of Kauai as the West Disaster Action Team Captain. Last year she coordinated the Red Cross' response to 3 house fires.
"We can provide 24 and 48 maybe a little bit longer assistance in getting people somewhere to go, getting their kids fed that night, getting them some clothing and some bedding."
Michele also manages the Kauai Red Cross hotline and the schedules to make sure it is staffed 24/7.
The storms Iselle and Julio didn't do any damage on Kauai, but they did serve as a reminder of what can happen. Which is why Michelle also lines up caterers like the Sheraton to make sure there will be hot meals for the public if and when disaster strikes.
"For instance when Iniki hit, I don't think anyone got to the island for like 10 days. So we have to know where all our supplies are and all our 'B' supplies are and all our 'C' supplies are because success is how you plan plan 'B.'"
Michelle also lives by the motto: volunteers are not paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless.
Congratulations to Michele Molineaux the Red Cross' Kauai Volunteer of the Year.
