Young innovators showcase their research, inventions at state science fair

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hundreds of public and private students participated in the 58th annual Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair Tuesday.

The best and the brightest from middle and high schools throughout the state turned out at the Hawaii Convention Center to present their research and inventions.

Student scientists and engineers covered every day issues ranging from finding renewable energy resources, to investigating radiation in Hawaii's water supply and even developing ways of getting rid of rust.

“It's a great learning experience and there's a lot of great things that come out of it. Like, for example, some of the senior projects, they're learning about removing cancer. And transferring cancer from different cells, so it's really interesting to see,” 8th grader from Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School Anthony Lee said.

The event is hosted annually by the Hawaii Academy of Science.

“I'm always inspired by the projects that I see here. And this is just one more example of what is right about schools in the state of Hawaii,” Gov. David Ige said.

Projects are judged on creativity, presentation and interview, the execution and data collection of their research.
