Colorado visitor drowns off Kauai beach

POIPU, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 74-year-old man from Colorado drowned off Kauai's Keoneloa Bay on Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Officials said Jake Jelinek had gone swimming and started struggling from the large waves. It appeared he hit his head on the reef during the struggle.

A family member swam out to Jelinek after noticing him floating facedown in the water at around 4 p.m. Bystanders helped bring him to shore and performed CPR until fire personnel arrived. After unsuccessful attempts to resuscitate him, he was transported to the Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Volunteers with Life's Bridges, a grief counseling service, are assisting Jelinek's family.
