HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Plans are progressing for a giant telescope on Hawaii's Big Island.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports five tractor-trailers delivered heavy equipment to the site on Mauna Kea early Tuesday.

The equipment will be used to clear the site of the Thirty Meter Telescope near the mountain's 13,796-foot summit.

The equipment was to have arrived earlier this month, but heavy snow at the top of the peak delayed delivery. The $1.4 billion telescope should be operational by 2024.

Some Native Hawaiian groups oppose the telescope because they consider the island's tallest peak sacred.

Protesters disrupted a groundbreaking ceremony in October. About 20 protesters were on hand Tuesday, but there were no disruptions.
