Movie Review: WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS

If you're looking for some laughs at the movies,  I recommend a comedy about vampires called WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. This movie is a very funny “mockumentary,” a fake documentary about a group of vampires who rent a shabby old house together in Wellington, New Zealand.

The vampires range in age from 183 to 8,000 and the film shows their struggle to get along with each other and to get by in the modern world.

Vladislov: The point is, Deacon, you haven't done the dishes in 5 years.
Viago: It is unacceptable to have bloody dishes all over this bench like this.
Vladislov: I'm so embarrassed when people come over.
Deacon: What does it matter; you bring them over and kill them. Vampires don't do dishes.

The writers of this movie must have had great fun, creating these wacky vampires with their clueless ways.
Vampires have no reflections (they see nothing when they look into a mirror), so they must help each other look good to attract potential victims.

Vlad: I don't know about the waistcoat. I go for a look I call “dead but delicious.” We are the bait but we are also the trap.
Viago: Some of our clothes are from victims. You might bite someone and think oh, those are nice pants.

Viago treats his victims as if they were on a romantic date.

Viago (voice over): It's their last moment alive so why not make it a nice experience.

The group does have one human friend (Stu) that they've vowed not to kill, because he's helping them learn about smart phones and and search engines.

Vlad: Anything you'd like to find, right?
Stu: Yeah.
Viago: I lost a really nice silk scarf in about 1912.

Vlad: Stu is the first human friend I've had in a long time. With humans there is a tendency to die.

The mockumentary camera crew even follows them as they crash a secret society party of other vampires.

Vlad: You will not eat the camera guy. Maybe one camera guy.

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS is a very goofy comedy. It's 86 minutes of inspired lunacy.
