[Update 8:30p: Thursday]

Hawaiian Telecom crews have erected a new utility pole and moved the fallen cables that were blocking lanes of traffic on Wilikina Drive.

All four lanes of traffic have been temporarily reopened to help alleviate the traffic congestion.

Lanes will go back to being contraflowed on Wilikina Drive at around 9:30 p.m., allowing one lane of traffic in each direction. Approximately 10 customers have reported telephone and internet service outages.

[Original Story, posted Thursday:]

Officials are investigating a multiple vehicle accident that happened in Wahiawa on Thursday afternoon.

At around 12 p.m., a large truck was transporting heavy machinery on Wilikina Drive when it snagged on overhead cables which severed Hawaiian Telecom cables and knocked down a 40 foot utility pole.

Another vehicle then collided with the downed power lines. Both drivers involved in the crash were not seriously hurt.

Police originally closed lanes in both directions of Wilikina Drive between Kunia, but have since reopened one lane in the southbound direction on Wilikina to contraflow traffic.

Kaukonahua Roads are also closed due to cables blocking the roadway.

Roads are expected to be closed for the next few hours.

It is unknown how many Hawaiian Telecom customers are affected by the incident, but crews are on scene and will erect a new pole and reopen the roadway as quickly as possible. Technicians are also working to repair the damaged cables.
