KAWAIHAE, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - A dedication ceremony Wednesday helped celebrate the completion of a $7 million improvement project at the Kawaihae Harbor's Pier 2.
The project included resurfacing 3.1 acres of cargo yard area and making improvements to lighting, fire protection and drainage. Energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures and photovoltaic panels were also added to help reduce energy costs.
"The new container yard provides additional space for cargo containers and increases operational acreage here by twelve percent," Ford Fuchigami, director of the Hawaii Department of Transportation, said in a statement. "This additional capacity will help to keep up with the demands of our growing communities and improve the Big Island's resiliency during natural disasters."
About 80 percent of all goods are imported into the state, according to HDOT, and 98 percent of that arrives through commercial harbors.
