HALAWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu police are investigating an accident on the H-3 freeway that critically injured two people Sunday morning.
Police, fire and EMS crews arrived on scene to find two vehicles involved.
HPD closed the roads around 11:44 a.m. while they conducted the investigation.
Police said a red sports car was stalled in the far left lane of the freeway when a black pickup truck hit it from behind. A male and female in the sports car were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Witnesses said the accident happened about a mile before the tunnel, on the town side, heading into Kaneohe.
Kailua resident Gopala Lowther said this is the worst accident he has ever seen.
"The whole front hood was completely smashed, it looked like it was smashed in all the way. The whole engine and everything was completely smashed in like all the way to the windshield," he said.
Lowther said traffic was backed up all the way to Halawa and that police officers were turning cars around to head back into town.
Roads were reopened shortly after 2 p.m.
No word if anyone in the black pickup truck was injured.
