Senator Lisa Murkowski, Stevens' successor, and like him a Republican, is joining forces with Democrats Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz to seek an exemption for their two states.
Alaska's other senator, Dan Sullivan, also a Republican, has not said if he will join the effort.
Murkowski points out that many Alaskans have to fly multiple legs to get to hubs from towns that have no roads.
This is similar to what Hirono has said about neighbor island residents who have to fly to Honolulu for business, work and even certain medical procedures.
The only reason this is not a no-brainer for others in Congress, is that some resent the federal subsidies Alaska and Hawaii get for flights to especially remote places.
