High Surf Warning issued ahead of approaching northwest swell

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An approaching northwest swell will bring large waves to the islands starting Thursday evening. 

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Surf Warning -- in effect from 6 p.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. Friday -- for Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and Maui. Forecasters said surf will be between 22 to 26 feet across north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau, as well as across north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui. Surf will reach 16 to 20 feet across west-facing shores of Oahu and Molokai. 

A High Surf Advisory has also been issued for the Big Island starting at 6 p.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. Friday. Surf will be between 12 to 16 feet. 

Forecasters expect very strong breaking waves and strong longshore and rip currents. Beachgoers should heed all advice given by Ocean Safety officials.
