KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A suspected car thief is in the hospital after being shot by Honolulu police when he tried to run two officers over in Windward Oahu Tuesday afternoon.

Police say an officer approached 20-year-old William Andres, who was in a stolen car near Waimanalo District Park shortly before 1:30 p.m. They say when more officers arrived, he took off in the stolen car, hitting two of the officers. Police then fired multiple shots as he fled toward Kaneohe.

Shortly after shots were fired in Waimanalo, police say the stolen car was involved in a collision in Kaneohe. Witnesses say the white Honda Accord was heading the wrong way along Kamehameha Highway when it collided into a gold Toyota Tacoma head near Ualani Place. They say the driver of the Honda got out of the car, clearly injured, as he limped up the road holding his side.

Moments later, Kelly Contrades said she heard commotion in her backyard.

"All of a sudden I hear someone saying, 'Get down! Get down!' Next thing I know the cops were in my neighbor's yard and they had a suspect," Contrades said.

Police arrested Andres for first-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault of a police officer, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and several other offenses.

He was then taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to serious condition. Police say he has at least one gunshot wound. The two officers were taken to Castle Medical Center with minor injuries.

Kaneohe Elementary School was placed on lockdown during the pursuit and investigation.

Police say Andres is the same suspected auto thief involved in a police chase last week in the same area. In this incident, he and another man reportedly crashed into several vehicles, including a city bus. The other man was arrested, but Andres ran away.

Andres has five prior felony convictions for crimes like burglary, theft and a weapons offense.
