KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - ?
Maui police are investigating an early morning murder in Kahului.
As Hawaii News Now first reported Monday morning, a 'person of interest' is in custody and police sources tell Hawaii News Now that the 25-year-old man is the murder victim's son.
The 43-year-old woman was found with stab wounds in a one-bedroom shack around 4:30 a.m. A 911 caller reported hearing screams coming from the property on Makali'i Street. The caller's father, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he could hear a woman wailing and someone pounding on the walls.
Officers searching the area found the man in the back portion of the property's main house. Residents who live in the main house say he is Keoni Vinuya Thomas. Police say he had potential evidence on him linking him to the crime.
Thomas was also arrested in January in connection with the death of a 61-year-old woman. In that case, Gail Otsuka was found in a Kahului home on Molokai Akau Street with multiple stab wounds. Police sources say the killer tried to set the house on fire after the crime. In January, Thomas was released pending investigation. He has not been formally charged in either of the two incidents.
