UH AD search moving quickly; Matlin and McNamara among local candidates

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The search for a new athletics director at UH is sure heating up.

Once projected to play out over the course of months, it could be coming to a head soon.

Sources told Hawaii News Now on Friday that the process is moving faster than expected and an announcement on a selection could possibly come down within the next few weeks.

Of the 70 applicants, the search committee has apparently interviewed about 15-to-20.

Of that group, sources say Hawaii Bowl executive director David Matlin was among the few candidates with local ties.

John McNamara is also said to have interviewed for the job.

Originally, the university had planned to name finalists at the end of the month, but there's a chance front-runners could be announced soon.

Requests for either an interview or statement from Chancellor Robert Bley Vroman's office were not returned.

Current AD Ben Jay says he'll be in Manoa until June.
