Astronaut captures photo of Big Island from International Space Station

BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new photo shows what the Big Island looks like 200 miles from Earth.

European astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti snapped a photo from the International Space Station and posted it online on Feb. 28. She wrote:

And suddenly as we flew over the Pacific… the island of #Hawaii with its volcanoes! #HelloEarth

Crew members on the space station photograph Earth as part of the Crew Earth Observations program. Photographs record how the planet is changing over time, from human-caused changes to natural events.
