Former Maui mayoral candidate sentenced in stun gun incident

WAILUKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A former Maui County mayoral candidate who was shot with a stun gun has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.

A bystander recorded cell phone video of a police officer trying to arrest Beau Hawkes outside the Old Wailuku Court House building in July 2014.

The officer can be heard telling Hawkes to put his hands behind his back when Hawkes took off. "C'mon cop! You can't do this dude!" Hawkes can be heard yelling. The officer pulls out the stun gun and warns Hawkes: "You're being tased! You're being tased!" A moment later, the officer fired. That officer had pulled Hawkes over for talking on his cellphone, while driving a car with no license plates or insurance.

Watch HNN's report from July:

Hawkes was found guilty in December for disregarding an officer's orders and driving away from a traffic stop.

The video of him getting tased quickly went viral. Hawkes finished last in the primary election. A judge also ordered Hawkes to pay a $500 fine.
