LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - A woman living in Hawaii whose relatives were the inspiration for the iconic movie, 'The Sound of Music,' says her family has been delighted to see the story delight so many people over the years.
The award-winning film turned 50 on Monday. But when it was released in 1965, Bourgi von Trapp was 11 years old and living in Austria.
Von Trapp is a newcomer to Kauai. On Monday, she reflected on the film, which is about her real life grandfather, Captain Georg von Trapp.
The movie follows the story of Maria after she leaves a convent and falls in love with the captain.
Bourgi von Trapp was born in Vermont and moved to Austria at age 7. She recently moved to Hawaii, where she's a coordinator at Kealia Farm.
