KUNIA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 37-year-old man in custody died Monday after jumping out of a moving police vehicle and falling from a bridge off the H-1 freeway.
At around 4:15 p.m., Honolulu police officers were transporting the man from the Kapolei police station to the Castle Medical Center for medical health treatment. The man managed to remove the handcuffs, kicked out the back window of the patrol car and jumped out of the moving car, crossing multiple lanes on the H-1 freeway.
He then jumped over the concrete railing of the Honouliuli Bridge while officers attempted to restrain and prevent him from falling. The man then kicked both officers and fell to the ground.
He was later transported to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition and died at 5:30 p.m.
The incident snarled traffic in both directions during the evening commute.
