State representative sues UH for access to sex ed survey

HONOLULU (AP) - Republican state Rep. Bob McDermott is suing the University of Hawaii for access to a sex education survey given to public schoolchildren.

McDermott's lawsuit filed Tuesday says the survey is a government record and should be released publicly.

The university says the voluntary survey is part of a research project. University spokesman Dan Meisenzahl says research is rarely revealed while it's being gathered.

The lawsuit says the survey is part of the state Department of Education's Pono Choices sex education program.

McDermott criticizes the curriculum, saying it's not medically accurate and is a form of social engineering.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that according to McDermott, nearly 5,000 students received gift cards for taking the survey.

Meisenzahl says gift cards are commonly given to incentivize research participation.
