HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii Gov. David Ige is appointing a Molokai farmer to fill the vacant seat in the Hawaii House of Representatives.
Lynn DeCoite would succeed Rep. Mele Carroll, who resigned last month for health reasons. Carroll passed away Wednesday.
DeCoite is an owner of L&R Farm Enterprises and R.J.'s Snacks. She's also co-owner of V-8 Ranch.
DeCoite has served as chairwoman of the Farm Service Agency in Maui County and president of the Molokai Homestead Farmer's Alliance.
She says the appointment is an opportunity for her to help address issues like drought, food security and economic development for small and large businesses.
The seat represents East Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
Ige said Thursday DeCoite has deep roots in the community and is committed to working collaboratively.
