WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Drivers in the Waikiki and Kaimuki area may want to consider taking alternate routes for the next few months.
Officials announced that road closures will begin on Kapahulu avenue starting Tuesday night.
The city will be installing new concrete bus pads in preparation to repave the roadway. Drivers can expect 24-hour road closures on certain areas of Kapahulu Avenue that may last for the next couple months.
The already busy street will be repaved beginning in mid-March, when most of the work will be done at night in an attempt to alleviate congestion.
"When they start paving, there's a possibility in certain sections that they may have to close more of the road and maybe detour around a block or two somewhere," said Robert Kroning, Director of Design and Construction for the City and County of Honolulu.
Officials are hoping the road construction will be completed by the end of summer. The project is also part of the 7.6 million dollar project to repave two other busy streets on Oahu: Oahu Avenue in Manoa and Atkinson drive near Ala Moana Center.
