Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. reopened after fatal head-on collision in Kailua-Kona

KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Island Police have reopened a portion of Queen Kaahumanu after a traffic accident that left 3 people dead Saturday morning. 

Police say a Nissan pickup truck, driven by a 39-year-old man, was traveling north on Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. near Hinalani St. when he drove head-on into a Kia sedan. 

Upon arrival, firefighters found the Kia engulfed in flames. The male driver of the Kia and two of his passengers died at the scene. Another passenger, a 17-year-old girl, was able to exit the vehicle. She was taken to Kona Community Hospital for further treatment. 

It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were contributing factors in this crash. Police have initiated a negligent homicide investigation.  

Autopsies have been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. 

Police closed a portion of Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. between Hinalani St. and Hulikoa St. for about 3 hours.
