HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii is ranked sixth in the nation for sustainable building design.
That's according to the U.S. Green Building Council's annual ranking of top 10 states released Wednesday. Illinois ranked No. 1.
The council says Hawaii certified 30 green building projects in 2014. Those projects represent nearly 2.7 million square feet of real estate, or 1.95 square feet per resident. The rankings use 2010 Census data.
Gov. David Ige says Hawaii values protecting the environment and the planet's limited resources.
The council says some notable Hawaii projects include Honolulu's City Financial Tower and Puu Kukui Elementary School in Wailuku.
