HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Honolulu city council member wants something done about construction workers in Kakaako who park at Ala Moana Beach Park.
Before the sun comes up, parking begins to fill up at the park. Construction workers, carrying their coolers and coffee, walk across Ala Moana Boulevard to their construction sites, leaving their cars all day and leaving some beach goers without spots.
It's not a new problem.
"Ala Moana Shopping Center is doing major construction so they have a lot of construction workers," says City Councilmember Ann Kobayashi, she says the center recently started allowing their construction workers to park on-site at the mall.
Kobayashi, who's district includes Ala Moana, wants other construction companies to do the same. She will brief the rest of the council to come up with ideas.
"Maybe we'll send a letter to some of these companies and to maybe reach out to maybe Howard Hughes to see if there's something that can be worked out," Kobayashi says.
She will also suggest a park-and-ride, possibly at the Convention Center since there aren't a lot of activities scheduled during the week.
Honolulu Police issued 32 parking tickets at Ala Moana Beach Park last year, but Kobayashi doesn't like the idea of ticketing workers everyday. She hopes the council can come up with an alternative.
