Honolulu federal jury convicts man of dealing crystal meth

HONOLULU (AP) - A federal jury in Honolulu has found a California man guilty of dealing crystal methamphetamine.

The U.S. Attorney's office says Alan Mapuatuli was convicted Friday after a nine-day trial and less than one day of jury deliberations.

The 44-year-old faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without possibility for release.

Prosecutors say the conviction was a result of an undercover transaction involving a pound of crystal meth between Mapuatuli and an informant. When authorities searched Mapuatuli's vehicle, agents found nearly $16,000 in cash, a loaded .45-caliber pistol, a leather bag containing another pound of crystal meth and other items.

He was found guilty of distributing and possessing crystal meth and possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.
