HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A building northwest swell is expected to bring advisory-level surf to some Hawaiian islands over the weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory for north- and west-facing shores of Niihau and Kauai, and north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui. The advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday.

NWS forecasters said large waves are expected for Kauai and Maui through early Sunday. Waves aren't expected to reach advisory levels on west-facing shores of Oahu or Molokai until Saturday.

Surf for islands under the advisory will be between 10 to 15 feet Friday, rising to 14 to 18 feet Saturday.

NWS expects strong breaking waves, shore break and strong currents, which will create dangerous swimming conditions. Beachgoers should heed advice from Ocean Safety officials.
