Kauai nearing end of effort to change park, stadium lights

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - Kauai County officials are wrapping up a multi-million dollar effort to change lights at park and stadium facilities so they don't harm endangered seabirds.

The Garden Island newspaper reports the county is spending nearly $2 million on the last leg of a multi-year project to retrofit ball field lights at Hanapepe Park, Vidinha Stadium and other sites.

A separate $1.6 million contract paid to change 37 ball field lights in 2013 and 2014.

County Department of Parks and Recreation Director Lenny Rapozo says he's not sure how may lights need to be changed this time.

The old lights have been blamed for confusing fledgling seabirds who mistake the lights for the moon and stars when they migrate to sea.
