Dexter and Adrenne Matsuyama are mourning the loss of their two children who died in a house fire on Thursday in Halualoa on the Big Island.

The Hawaii County Fire Department says the one-story home on Old Mamalahoa Highway was fully engulfed in flames when nearly 20 firefighters arrived just after 2 a.m. Thursday morning.

The home was located down a narrow roadway, making it difficult for firefighters to fight the fire because only one truck could get close enough to the house.

The Matsuyamas as well as two children were able to escape the flames, but two other children, a 6-year-old boy and 11-year-old boy died in the fire.

Firefighters said it was too dangerous for crews to enter the home because the walls and ceilings had collapsed.

After the flames were brought under control, crews were able to retrieve the victims from the home. Police identified the two boys as Kaeden Matsuyama, 6, and Dexen Matsuyama, 11.

The two boys were students at Halualoa Elementary School, located just across the street from their home, and the school has brought in counselors to help classmates deal with the tragic loss.

The fire department says the fire completely destroyed the house, estimating the damage at $150,000.

Fire investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire, which may have started under the house where gas cans and a propane tank were located.

Police do not suspect foul play. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the children's exact cause of death.
